Senior Service

Over the many years that I have been in practice I have always had a large number of seniors among my clients. I have taught Geriatric Massage in the past and I organized student massage outreach to senior centers and assisted living facilities. Currently I am a professional massage volunteer with Hospice Compassus, which has given me the opportunity to meet and work with some exceptional, older people.

Many of the older generation are not accustomed to getting massage and may consider it ‘fluff’ or even sexual, out of ignorance. However, I have witnessed how massage therapy, when professionally applied to older clients, can really help them maintain quality of life as they age.

Elders want to retain as much mobility as possible and your massage therapist can help keep muscles loose and pain free and keep good range of motion in stiff joints. Massage can help with swollen feet, frozen shoulder or pinched nerves in your back. Even towards the end of life massage can speed recovery from falls, give much needed physical comfort, help with pain control and provide a welcome break from the day-to-day.

Todays Tip

If you are in pain, consider contacting a massage therapist experienced in working with chronic pain and its related issues. If you are in the Sedona area I would be happy to work with you and your doctor, physical trainer or physical therapist to put together an action plan for controlling your pain. Try everything and keep searching for what works best for you.
